Bring one surfboard that you are used to and ride a lot for fun, smaller days at your home break. This board typically is a fish or a hybrid board that is a couple inches shorter than your standard shortboard and a bit thicker. This board will be used primarily for the days in the chest high to slightly overhead where the waves are better for turns.

Local Tip —
There are countless fun size waves in the Mentawais that are dream for fishes and hybrids. Don’t leave it at home.

Bring 1-2 surfboards that you would typically ride in very good quality surf in the head high to overhead zone. This type of board should a very dependable board that you ride back home when the surf is very good or when you travel to good surf. A standard shortboard is different for everyone but this is the type of board that you typically ride with barreling waves that are good for turns as well.

Local Tip —
Most of our barreling waves (up to a couple feet overhead) work best with a shortboard. This is the board you will ride the most during your trip and also has the highest risk of breaking. If you can budget it, best to bring 2 shortboards and we suggest one with a squash tail and one with a round tail

Bring one board that you would typically ride when the surf is pumping, barreling and on the heavier side. This board is typically a couple inches longer than your shortboard, a bit narrower, a bit thicker, heavier glass and with a rounded/pin tail. This board will be used when the surf is double overhead plus where you looking for control, rather than maneuverability.  

Local Tip —
You do not need a super long board or super narrow board in the Mentawais. A good step up out here is that is similar to your shortboard, but is 3-4 inches longer, a bit thicker, heavier glass and narrower, rounded tail.
